The name she was given, Chishell was a portmanteau made out of the peculiar circumstances of her birth. Her mother went into labor in Shell Station, and Chris her attendant assisted her birth the baby. Strause's book dispels the rumors about her birth. Strause spoke out about her mother's car troubles, and pulled into an auto-gas station. As she waited at the station, she entered pre-labor, and the attendant at the car genuinely helped her to reach an emergency room. Strause was conceived in an in-hospital. Her mother who was half Japanese and half Spanish, split up before she knew she was pregnant. Jeff is her stepfather. Chrishell Strause had to live in a tent during middle school, which meant she missed a full academic year. Strause shared her memories of hiding her identity from her peers by recounting how she was washing her hair in streams and applying for food stamps. The parents of Strause were struggling with addiction and mental illness. Strause was 10 when she joined the Worldwide Church of God. Her mother was never able to have an employment that was steady and Strause describes her as a free spirit and self-righteous.
